Heading north from Kernville, Brewer's Ponderosa Lodge is "At the Top of the Mountain" where the Western Divide Highway changes to Highway 190. It's open year-round and accessible in winter from Highway 190 since the Western Divide Highway can be closed from October/November until April/May due to snowfall. Chains are sometimes required on Highway 190 so be prepared. In the spring, summer, and fall you'll find an accommodating restaurant, bar, general store, and rooms for rent. In the winter you can count on the Ponderosa area as a great place for snowplay and cross country skiing and the gear you need is available for sale or rent at Brewer's. Don't forget the famous Brewer's Mountain Style Chili Cook-off held each year on Saturday of Memorial Day week-end.

The Kern River Hatchery currently releases approximately 250,000 1/2 pound size rainbow trout into local waterways each year. In addition, some 1,000 "Trophy Trout", (4-7 pound size), are planted weekly during the months from April thru August, and every other week from September. to March. Trout are delivered from the San Joaquin hatchery near Fresno in large tanker trucks and held in raceways supplied with water from the Kern River. The trout are then taken in smaller trucks and released into sections of the Kern River and other local waterways. The hatchery grounds are normally open on a year round basis from 8:00am to 3:30pm daily, and hosts thousands of visitors each year who come to view and feed the fish in the holding pens. |

This original marina, constructed on Lake Isabella back in the 1950's, is nestled in a cove along Lake Isabella's west shore in the town of Wofford Heights. Camping is available right next to the marina at Tillie Creek Campground. North Fork Marina rents personal watercraft, pontoon boats, and fishing boats and also has more than 30 private slips complete with lights and a security gate.
