The Kern River Hatchery currently releases approximately 250,000 1/2 pound size rainbow trout into local waterways each year.  In addition, some 1,000 "Trophy Trout", (4-7 pound size), are planted weekly during the months from April thru August, and every other week from September. to March.

Trout are delivered from the San Joaquin hatchery near Fresno in large tanker trucks and held in raceways supplied with water from the Kern River.  The trout are then taken in smaller trucks and released into sections of the Kern River and other local waterways.

The hatchery grounds are normally open on a year round basis from 8:00am to 3:30pm daily, and hosts thousands of visitors each year who come to view and feed the fish in the holding pens.
